Geodetic observation and analysis system in seismically active regions in Chile

The German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), in cooperation with the University of Concepción (UdeC), operates a Transportable Integrated Geodetic Observatory (TIGO) in Concepción, Chile. TIGO includes instruments for precise geodetic positioning (GNSS, SLR, VLBI), time keeping (frequency standards, clocks), gravity (absolute, super-conducting gravimeters), geophysics (seismometer, accelerometer), meteorology (pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, vapour pressure), soil humidity, ocean tides (tide gauge, GNSS).

In order to support the use of the attained data by Chilean institutes, the present project was established in cooperation of DGFI, FESG, UdeC, and IGM Chile. The objective is to install geodetic observation stations and analysis centres which allow to measure and analyse continuously point motions of the Earth crust in seismically active regions and to represent the crustal deformations in near real-time. The necessary software shall be provided by DGFI. A dense network of GNSS Stations concentrated in the 8th Region in Chile shall monitor crustal deformations. GNSS, SLR, and VLBI Analysis Centres to be installed in Chile shall provide the data and analysis results to the international scientific community.
